When you are checking a planning application, the surrounding roads and neighbourhood matter. A national overview helps you get started, but you need a closer view to understand where a record sits.
This update makes local detail easier to explore on the PlanWatch planning map, on application pages and in the desktop search-detail panel. It keeps the existing basemap and adds clearer controls, more room and a direct route from an application to the wider area.
Move from Ireland to local detail
The full map still opens with an Ireland-wide view. Use Town names to move to a town-scale view around the current centre, or Street detail to zoom closer for roads and buildings. You can still pan and use the normal zoom controls to choose your own view.
Filters and layers now open when you need them rather than covering the map from the start. The smaller toolbar leaves more of the map visible on a phone. A metric scale helps you judge distances, and high-density screens receive sharper imagery without shrinking the labels.
More room around an application
Application maps are taller, and the desktop search-detail map has more space too. Select a location marker, or focus it with the keyboard and press Enter, to read the public application reference, site address and location guidance.
Choose Explore this area in PlanWatch to open the full map at the same coordinates. This view includes all dates and the supported application statuses, so an older or lapsed application is not excluded by the initial filters. The optional commencement layer starts off; you can enable it under Filters & layers.
Clearer does not mean more precise
A sharper map does not change the accuracy of an application's recorded location. Street-level and area-level positions remain labelled as approximate. If precision is unavailable, the map says it is unconfirmed rather than presenting the marker as a verified site.
Road names and buildings still depend on mapped coverage. A location marker is not a site boundary, and the council record remains the place to check the exact site and submitted plans.
